Day 9 - No News is Good News

Day 9 - No News is Good News

Day 9 – Wednesday, July 26, 2017

AGE: 1 week, 2 days (25 weeks, 6 days gestation)

Lochlan: Weight isoz. (Birth weight: 1 lb 10.8 oz.)
Length  in. (Birth Length 13 in.)
Lex:        Weight is oz. (Birth weight: 1 lb 10.8 oz.)
Length is  in. (Birth length: 13 in.)

If we are not at the hospital, Kyle calls the NICU every few hours to check in. Last night the nurse’s update was basically, “I have no real news for you.” This was the first update that didn’t have a change in care or the twins’ status. It was the best update so far. Kyle and I actually got a few solid stretches of sleep last night. Between the stress, emotional exhaustion, discomfort from surgery and having to pump every few hours, we are up as much as we would be if the twins were at home with us. Sleep was very welcomed and needed.

Lochlan is back on breast milk at a slow input rate. He had been taken off about 36 hours ago because he had vomited, had discoloration in his bowels and had a bloated tummy. The digestive system at this age is very sensitive and the doctors remove feeds any time there is a disruption. Again, we are asking their little bodies to do something it is not supposed to do at this age which is digest food. Loch was put back on feeds almost 24 hours ago and has had no issues.

Lex is doing well today too. His hematocrit was a bit low which is likely caused by his PDA. Today, he will undergo another transfusion to get his red blood cells up. Other than that, everything is stable.

Both twins’ weights are up today even considering that Loch has been taken off of feeds. It is common for babies to lose weight during the first 2 weeks of life. Our guys are not back up to birth weight but are trending upward and its only been 8 days since their birth.

I have a small procedure and CT scan tomorrow which will confirm that my bladder surgery was successful.  During the trauma of my c section, a 1 cm hole was created in my bladder causing bleeding in the cavity. This damage required me to go under for a second surgery about 17 hours after my caesarean section to repair the hole. After the appointments tomorrow, I will feel a million times better and can really begin to heal. I am focused on my health, so I can get to a point where I can visit the boys as much and as long as I want. I look forward to a solid night’s sleep, in my bed and with Kyle. Less than 24 hours until my appointment and I am counting down each hour.

Yesterday, Kyle told me that he could tell I was becoming, “supermom” again. If I were to translate that statement, what he meant was, “you are being really bossy.” Either way, it’s a good thing and I look forward to feeling 100%.
