Day 92 - Ready for Discharge!?
10/17/17 Day 92 of Life
.
24 weeker, 1 lb twins do not usually get discharged before their due date, but the Irish males in our family like to do things a little differently…
.
The medical team began a sort of discharge check list of things that needed to happen before our boys could come home. We had a couple follow up tests done which showed that Lex’s brain bleed was resolving. He had had a grade I bleed on the left side of brain that happened in the first few days of life, but there was no evidence that we should expect any neurological impact.
.
His brother, Lochlan, had had two separate grade IV brain bleeds and the MRIs showed that those hemorrhages had left an imprint on his brain. We knew we were likely to see neurological impacts down the road, but for the time being, I just saw a 7 lb warrior who was about to beat his “neurologically normal” brother to discharge. Lochlan was taking almost full feeds via bottle, he was only on ¼ liter oxygen and was alert and curious about his surroundings. We also had a cardio ultrasound that had shown Lochlan’s PDA was gone.
.
Aside from taking all of his feeds via bottle, he was ready to be discharged. All he needed was time..
